Impact Week

The week of the 28th, High school changed up their classes to create “Impact Week”. What is impact week? You may ask. Well, impact week is a week where students destine their time to find solutions to worldwide problems. More especially The SDG targets made by the UN. It’s essentially Project-based learning. On day 1, students were welcomed with an ice breaker between their teammates. Teams consisted of 10th and 9th graders. Usually 4 people. This ice breaker consisted of creating a tall tower with newspaper. After that students were given a yummy and special breakfast full of medialunas and fruit to start off this week. Later the “impact week” opening ceremony started. Students were assigned SDGs, from No poverty to Gender equality, and targets. Specific goals they wanted to accomplish. After the ceremony, all of day 1 consisted of researching and getting familiar with the topic you were given.

Day 2 was full of research with a side of workshops. Apart from researching, students were given workshops about the All’s. Where they learned about communication, presentation, information, researching, etc. Everything to help with “Impact Week”. And before lunch students received a physical activity period where they went either to the field, gym or participated in a workshop. This continued for the rest of the week before lunch.

Day 3 was the P’s fair. Students were welcomed and introduced to the ideas of a fair at the beginning of the day. This fair was a way for students to get feedback from other students on their presentations and for students to explore the 3 Ps. Pre-mortem, Pre-parade, and Pitch. All things that will apply to them and they will need to learn for their presentation on Friday.  This fair was a success and was started with a pizza lunch for students.

Day 4 was the day of change. Students ran the halls making changes, answering forms, etc. Everyone wanted to be ready and wanted to have a good plan to pitch to the panel on Day 5. It was a stressful but very productive day. This takes me to day 5.

Day 5 was a nerve-filled day within the first hours of school. Students were rehearsing and rehearsing their presentations to fix their SDGs. And as an audience member, I can say that every single plan was creative, unique, and outstanding. It will definitely make an Impact. As the presentation came to an end students were led to “listening Circles”. These circles were used to collect feedback and to close off this week. After this students were given a sweet snack to lead them into the last and final closing ceremony for this Impactful week. Overall “Impact Week” was a success. Students enjoyed their time and were passionate about what they were fixing. At last, we can say “Impact Week” will be missed and waited for the next year and years to come.
